X Factor, Queen Week, Results Show – A Review

X FactorHere is my (extremely concise) review of the results show:

One thing that was apparent in this show more than anything is that the use of pre-recorded sound is heavily relied on in the Pop World. I reckon 99% of pop stars out there would get slated for not being a strong singer if they came on X Factor. The contestants sound great when they do their group songs, but they looked like absolute plonkers! If they are gonna mime they should at least learn how to. Also I don’t think that the drumming in Shakira’s performance was done live either, but it looked great!

Onto the survival songs, Jamie for me was by far the best, it was a great rendition of a great song. Lloyd on the other hand was terrible, and Louis should have sent him home, after all the vote is supposed to be on the Survival song alone and not who has the most potential. The fact that Jamie left is an ABSOLUTE disgrace, it just cements the fact that this is by far more of a popularity contest than a singing contest.

I am more shocked at this result than last weeks. PISSED OFF is an understatement.

PLONKER of the week award: Has to go to Louis Walsh. What an idiot. He needs to be fired and bring in another judge next year!

X Factor, Queen Night – A Review…

X FactorSo, the remaining 7 hopefuls have performed and we are now all Queened Out! Here is my (very concise) review:

Jamie, Radio Gaga: Love this guy, great opening to the show. Freddie will be dancing in his grave! Great showman. Hewis Rating: ★★★★☆

Lloyd, Crazy little thing called love: Pissed me off from the start when he said that he didn’t know who Queen were because he wasn’t born til the 90’s. WTF, if I was born yesterday I’d still know who Queen was, MUPPET! Performance was meh! Dislike him more than Jedward. Hewis Rating: ★½☆☆☆

Olly, Don’t Stop Me Now: Still my fave, though was slightly out of tune, which you don’t expect from Olly. But a great lively song choice for a lively essex boy! Really think he could be the next Robbie! Hewis Rating: ★★★★½

Joe, Somebody to love: There is no denying he has a good voice, and I think he bats for the other team. Though I stick by what I have said in previous weeks. I wouldn’t buy his records, would you? Hewis Rating: ★★★½☆

John & Edward, Under Pressure/Ice Ice Baby: I’m actually warming to these two! I thought it was a good performance, and for the majority of the song they were in tune! But what is up with X Factor security, that someone managed to get onto the stage??? Hewis Rating: ★★★☆☆ (My highest Jedward rating so far!)

Stacey, Who wants to live forever?: Think it was my favourite performance of the night. Thought she looked and sounded stunning. Essex REPRESENTS!!!!!!!!! Hewis Rating: ★★★★½

Danyl, We are the champions: Watched the whole performance with a grimace on my face, there were parts of the performance when I was like ‘This guy is really good’, but most of it I was like ‘That was WRONG!’. Hewis Rating: ★★★½☆

Hmmm, an interesting night, some great performances, including Jedward, a random member of the audience on stage, great songs from an amazing band! I’m looking forward to the results show tomorrow, especially the performance from Shakira!

Nomination for MBE: Mr Simon Cowell, stand up, and kneel down and be knighted…Sir Cowell!

Prediction for tomorrow: Lloyd HAS to go, but who will be joining him? Maybe Jamie, but like I said last week hopefully not!

Jedward ‘Close To Signing Record Deal’…

Jedward

X Factor twins John and Edward Grimes are close to signing a record deal and are already attracting “huge interest” within the music industry, according to show judge Louis Walsh.

The Irish teenagers only survived last weekend’s elimination process because Simon Cowell opted to put them through to a public vote.

“Jedward will soon sign a record deal, there is huge interest in them and they’ll be making pop records and having the time of their lives,” Walsh told Sky News Online.

“As far as I’m concerned they have won already because they have proved Simon wrong. I’ll be happy if we get one more week but they can keep going and going.”

Tomorrow night’s show will feature the music of rock legends Queen, but while Jedward had been tipped to sing Radio Ga Ga it is now understood that they may end up performing the hit single Under Pressure.

“I think it’s totally appropriate given how they keep getting through against the odds,” Walsh added.

“It’s a pity that the people of Ireland can’t vote because their support could really swing this for the two boys, I’m absolutely sure of it.”

X Factor is regularly attracting peak audiences of 16 million each Saturday and Sunday night on ITV.

Sting calls X Factor ‘TV karaoke’…

sting

Rock star Sting has called the X Factor “televised karaoke” and said judges like Simon Cowell have “no recognisable talent apart from self-promotion”.

The singer, 58, told London’s Evening Standard that the Saturday night show was “a soap opera which has nothing to do with music”.

He added: “I am sorry but none of those kids are going to go anywhere, and I say that sadly.”

Sting rose to fame with The Police, but has also had a successful solo career.

With albums like Ten Summoner’s Tales and Nothing Like The Sun, he has notched up 11 Grammys, two Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy and three Oscar nominations.

The Police, who recently reformed and performed a sell-out world tour, scooped five Grammy awards when they were together.

‘Appalling’

Sting said the singers who participate in the X Factor, created by Cowell in 2004, were “humiliated when they get sent off”.

He added: “How appalling for a young person to feel that rejection. It is a soap opera which has nothing to do with music.

“In fact, it has put music back decades. Television is very cynical.”

The singer, whose Fields Of Gold is a staple of talent show auditions, went on to say that X Factor encouraged contestants to “conform to stereotypes”.

He added: “They are either Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston or Boyzone and are not encouraged to create any real unique signature or fingerprint.

“That cannot come from TV. The X Factor is a preposterous show and you have judges who have no recognisable talent apart from self-promotion, advising them what to wear and how to look. It is appalling.

“The real shop floor for musical talent is pubs and clubs, that is where the original work is. But they are being closed down on a daily basis. It is impossible to put an act on in a pub.

“The music industry has been hugely important to England, bringing in millions. If anyone thinks the X Factor is going to do that, they are wrong.”

A spokesperson for the X Factor declined to comment on Sting’s interview, saying he was entitled to his opinion.

Sting has just released a new album, called If On A Winter’s Night, which is a collection of carols, lullabies and ancient songs.

The star, born Gordon Sumner in Newcastle, took on many different jobs, including a tax collector and teacher, before he found fame at the age of 27.

The musician’s opinions are unlikely to sway the 15.4 million people who tuned into Sunday night’s edition of the X Factor.

They witnessed Welsh teenager Lucie Jones lose out to Irish twins John and Edward via the public vote, after Cowell refused to make the call on which act to keep in the contest.

Watchdog rules out X Factor probe…

X FactorBroadcasting watchdog Ofcom says it is not investigating some 3,000 complaints to ITV about X Factor hopefuls John and Edward Grimes staying in the contest.

ITV, whose message boards was deluged after Sunday’s result, said the show “can divide opinion and provoke comment from our viewers”.

The Irish pair survived the sing-off with Lucie Jones after judge Simon Cowell turned to the public result.

Cowell has been criticised for not casting his vote for a second week.

‘Big stars’

Sara Nathan, showbusiness editor of the Daily Mail, told BBC 5 live: “This is why there have been 3,000 complaints to ITV.”

But she added the music mogul “was doing the right thing”.

“You have to go slightly past a singing competition and realise this is now a big reality juggernaut.

“‘Jedward’ could be fantastic. They could be really big stars,” Ms Nathan said.

Lucie Jones

Maureen Coleman, writing on The Independent’s website, asked: “Was this a Machiavellian master-stroke on the part of the most influential man in the entertainment industry?”

An Ofcom spokesman said that it launches formal investigations into complaints including the treatment of TV show contestants and flaws in voting processes, but not the outcome of programmes.

But the watchdog added that it reviews every complaint that it receives.

One complainant to ITV’s X Factor message board said of Sunday’s result: “He [Cowell] will make more money out of the twins being on the show.”

“After banging on, week in week out, about how the twins were rubbish and it was a singing competition, he threw away the chance to prove it,” said another.

Cowell has consistently criticised the twins, saying he would leave the country if they won the show.

‘Jedward’ saved by X Factor fans…

Lucie & Jedward

Lucie Jones has become the fifth contestant to leave ITV1’s The X Factor, losing out following a sing-off with twins John and Edward Grimes.

The deciding vote was left with Simon Cowell, who refused to send the twins home despite previously saying he would leave the country if they won the show.

Instead, the fate of the two acts was decided by the public vote.

ITV’s X Factor message boards have been flooded with support for Jones, 18, who was a 16/1 outsider to leave the show.

One wrote that Cowell had deferred the decision because “he will make more money out of the twins being on the show”.

“After banging on, week in week out, about how the twins were rubbish and it was a talent/singing competition, he threw away the chance to prove it,” another wrote.

“Lucie sang beautifully – she should still be in. I won’t be watching anymore.”

But another said: “Simon was spot on, she was never going to win.

The pair “pull in the crowd”, they added.

John and Edward, nicknamed “Jedward”, have divided public opinion with critics saying they lack the singing ability to justify their continued presence in the competition.

On Saturday night’s movie-themed X Factor show, they sang Ghostbusters while Jones performed This Is Me, as featured on Camp Rock.

In the sing-off on Sunday night’s results show, the twins sang Robbie Williams’s Rock DJ while Jones sang Whitney Houston’s One Moment In Time.

Following those performances, the Irish double act’s mentor Louis Walsh voted to keep them in the competition.

But fellow judges Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole both wanted 18-year-old Jones to remain in the contest.

Left with the deciding vote, Cowell said: “I think, Lucie, my problem has been with you that I believe there’s a ceiling and, with John and Edward, we’ve had some horrific performances.

“Having said that, who would I rather see again? I’d probably rather see the boys.”

He added: “I’m going to let the public decide.”

After she learned of her fate, Jones, from Pentyrch near Cardiff, said: “I’m gutted but the boys deserve to be here – they work harder than anyone.”

Minogue, who mentored Jones, said: “I just wish all the good singers good luck in the singing competition.”

Cowell has previously said it would be “a complete and utter disaster” if John and Edward won the X Factor and that he was “praying” it did not happen.

But on Saturday night, he praised their Ghostbusters performance as “possibly more entertaining than anything you have done before”.

The Sunday night results show attracted the biggest X Factor audience so far this series – an average of 14.4m, according to overnight figures.

On Saturday, it attracted 11.8m viewers, compared with 8.7m for BBC One rival Strictly Come Dancing.

The two overlapped for just 15 minutes on Saturday night.

The BBC and ITV were criticised in September when the shows clashed for up to an hour, forcing some viewers to decide between the two.
